Will an asteroid hit Earth, and could it spell the end of the world?

Earth's planetary defences are facing one of their first major tests as an asteroid with about a one in 50 chance of hitting the planet has been detected. While we do have tools to potentially divert or destroy an asteroid if needed, experts say each of those methods carry risks and there are still plenty of questions about who exactly is in charge of protecting the Earth.
