To be honest, we don’t remember a ton about Disney+’s Hawkeye show, despite watching the entire thing back in 2021—and what we do remember is mostly the really eye-catching stuff: The Avengers musical; the shock introduction of Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin to the MCU; the slightly flirty buddy comedy dynamic between Hailee Steinfeld and Florence Pugh. And, of course, Tony Dalton and his beautiful mustache, the latter of which is about to be reunited with D’Onofrio, courtesy of the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again.
Variety broke the news that Dalton would be getting back to the street-level TV side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe soon, reprising his role as Jack Duquesne, known in the comics as Swordsman. Although his Hawkeye arc could ultimately be summed up as “We know you’re all familiar with Lalo from Better Call Saul, so we’re going to screw with you by making this guy seem like a bad guy,” Dalton nevertheless gave a really fun performance as Kate Bishop’s smarmy soon-to-be stepdad, so we’re happy to have the character back in the mix. It does raise the question of whether other Hawkeye cast members (notably Jack’s fiancée Eleanor, played by Vera Farmiga) might also pop up in the series, which has suffered a somewhat troubled production as it works to import characters and concepts originally expressed in the Netflix Daredevil series into the wider Marvel fold. Most of the show’s big casting moves have been in that direction, what with Charlie Cox and D’Onofrio starring, and Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Jon Bernthal, and Wilson Bethel all reprising variations on their old parts.
Still, it’s easy to see plenty of spots where Dalton’s Jack, a member of New York high society who also knows how to use a sword, might fit in to the show’s narrative. Said story follows Cox’s Matt Murdock, trying to navigate justice in both his “being a lawyer” and “hitting people very hard with a nightstick” guises, while Fisk’s Kingpin attempts to go legit (for a “New York mayor” value of legit, anyway) by running for public office.
Daredevil: Born Again debuts on Disney+ on March 4.
