MAFS’ Latest Commitment Ceremony Delivered Us Receipts, Apologies And… Meat?

Well, it’s that time of week again when we all deservedly switch off our brains and revel in the mind-numbing deliciousness that is Married At First Sight (MAFS).

The controversial groom — who is married to TV wife Awhina Rutene — is very much still a topic of conversation among the participants, but following the absolute clusterfuck that was the last dinner party, he’s not the only one who has some ‘splainin’ to do (ahem, Eliot Donovan, ahem).

Eliot’s behaviour at said dinner party is discussed by his new wife, Veronica Cloherty, when it comes time for the pair to brave the commitment ceremony couch.
In what becomes a trend for the entire episode, Eliot takes accountability for his regrettable antics — which saw him mock other participants in a blow-out that expert (and daddy) John Aiken described as “one for the ages” — and even offers an apology to his ex-wife, Lauren Hall.

Eliot is a better man than I after a reckless night (I just get hang-xiety), but do we believe his apology? It seems Veronica does, and the pair both agree to stay in the experiment.
Lauren is equally chuffed with her new boo Clint Rice, and commits to staying with him while also throwing a few strays her ex’s way (get him, Loz!).

In what was undoubtedly one of the episode’s strangest moments, the perpetually watchable (and somewhat loopy) Jacqui Burfoot brought copious notes of the grievances she has with husband Ryan Donnelly.
Yep, she brought receipts, but for those thinking her grievances would be somewhat reasonable — think again. Jacqui’s biggest gripe, you ask?

Apparently, the list works, and with a little help from John — who I guess possesses the keys to the universe — the pair decide to stay. And so the strangest marriage in history continues.

Jacqui’s quibbles against Ryan feel all the more unnecessary when we learn that she reached out to Jeff Gobbels for coffee but didn’t extend the invite to his wife, Rhi Disljenkovic. GASP!
Jacqui explained that, for some reason, Jeff was a shoulder to cry on amid all her grievances with Ryan, who she said she “can’t handle,” but it was no matter for Rhi and Jeff, who revealed they had been intimate. DOUBLE GASP!
Things heat up when it’s time for Sierah Swepstone and Billy Belcher’s turn in the hot seat.

ICYMI, Sierah was swept up in a cheating scandal when it was revealed that she had gone for dinner with Adrian (TRIPLE GASP!). The biggest crime? The secret dinner in question was “a plate of meat,” a menu choice that understandably got fans talking.
Billy is rightfully pissed that Sierah only apologised to Awhina for the debacle — to the point where he writes “leave.”

Sierah does too, marking the couple’s exit from MAFS, but not before Billy delivers the second apology of the night — for floating the idea of a wife-swap with Adrian.
John called that moment “poor form” on Billy’s part, and he cops to it in a way that Adrian could learn from.
Speaking of Adrian, the most jaw-dropping moment arrived during his and Awhina commitment ceremony.
Since Adrian takes accountability like I take my coffee (I don’t drink coffee), this moment was particularly frustrating.
We learn from John’s behind-the-scenes tea that Adrian offered an ultimatum, demanding that producers put him in the promo shoot or else he’d leave.

Two feet-fire-holders are John and fellow expert Alessandra Rampolla, who point out Adrian’s pattern of defensiveness and the bizarre excuse that his behaviour is because he is “a man.”
In response, Adrian offers an apology so half-baked it could do with another 20 minutes in the oven.

The fireworks (and waterworks) continue when Awhina reveals her decision, dedicating her exit to her children. She emotionally recalls the letter she wrote during confessions week, and honestly, it was a total tear-fest. Even John was caught smoky-eyed!

While it would’ve been a graceful departure, Awhina ultimately has to continue the experiment, since Adrian wrote “stay.” Here’s hoping his continuing on MAFS will someday soon lead to a well-deserved, long-awaited comeuppance.
Best believe I’ll be relishing that moment when it arrives.
