The lawsuit against hip-hop moguls Sean “Diddy” Combs and Jay-Z has been dismissed. The case, which accused the pair of raping a 13-year-old girl back in 2000, was voluntarily dismissed by the plaintiff’s lawyer on Friday.
The anonymous accuser, known only as Jane Doe, had her attorney Tony Buzbee submit the dismissal in New York. This means the lawsuit can’t be refiled in its current form, effectively putting this particular legal drama to bed.
Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, didn’t hold back in celebrating the dismissal. In a statement posted to his record label’s Instagram account, Roc Nation, Jay Z called it a “victory” and didn’t mince words about the allegations.
“The frivolous, fictitious and appalling allegations have been dismissed,” he wrote, adding that the “fictional tale they created was laughable, if not for the seriousness of the claims”.
The rapper went on to describe the toll the accusations took on his family, including wife Beyoncé and their kids. He stressed the importance of courts protecting the innocent from baseless accusations, saying, “May the truth prevail for all victims and those falsely accused equally.”
Jay-Z’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, praised his client for standing his ground in a separate statement to the BBC. “By standing up in the face of heinous and false allegations, Jay has done what few can – he pushed back, he never settled, he never paid one red penny, he triumphed and cleared his name,” Spiro stated.
The lawsuit saga began in October when Jane Doe first filed against Diddy, later adding Jay-Z to the mix in December. However, things got messy when the accuser gave an interview admitting to some uncertainty about the facts. “I have made some mistakes. I may have made a mistake in identifying,” she confessed, raising concerns about the credibility of her claims.
While Jay-Z can breathe a sigh of relief, Diddy’s legal woes are far from over. The Bad Boy Records founder is still facing dozens of civil suits and is currently being held in a Brooklyn detention centre on federal criminal charges as he awaits trial. Diddy has been denied bail three times and is set to face trial on 5 May 2025
