Three art posters on the studio wall.

New art posters on the wall! I love them!

A few weeks ago I became very aware at just how boring the walls are in this house. There is very little art hanging in this place, and what is here has been following us around for a couple decades or more. I’m the primary problem, I need art to be meaningful, and personal, so I drag my heels on decorating because nothing is ever good enough. But I’ve got a few illustrations of my own I really like, a few goodish photos too, and some old artwork from the kids that I dig. So bit by bit I’m framing art and filling up the walls.

Better late than never, as they say.

Printing these three images had a technical aspect that could have been a roadblock. I had to scale them up from their original size of A3 (297 x 420 mm / 11.7 x 16.5 in) to poster size (in this case 18×24 in). I wasn’t sure I could do it cleanly, and it required a shallow dive into resampling algorithms.

If you’ve ever been in the Document resize… dialog of Affinity Photo, or Photoshop, or whatever, you already know there are several options for resampling. If you don’t use these products don’t worry about it, you aren’t missing much. I tried writing a blog post about resampling algorithms but got so bored with it I wasn’t able to post anything to this blog for weeks. Anyway, the important bit, if you care about this nonsense, is I used the Lanczos 3 separable resampling option to scale them up. It provided the best result overall – crisp lines, no blurring, and no pixelation. Cat and hazmat each had very minimal artifacts from the scaling, but they were super easy to fix.

The only other thing I did – after scaling them I tightened each of the drawings up a bit more with just a touch of unsharp mask.

I ordered the art prints from Printful since they’ve printed shirts for me in the past with excellent results. They came back stunning! Matte finish, bright rich colours. The blacks are deep and amazing.

I should have done this years ago, it really makes the entire house better!

I draw stories.
